Artists Statement
I paint scenes of choreographed performances staged in a large, studio-like space replete with all manner of both literal and phantasmagorical props. Recently the corporeal dancers and dreamers who make up my realistic set of characters have found themselves caught in mid-dance or mid-plot, set off against a painted backdrop or scrim, and interacting three-dimensionally with a strange, parallel universe of objects and beings which are sometimes diaphanous and floating and sometimes structural and solid. Aside from whatever else my paintings may be about, I would like to establish a context where the real and the abstract can coexist stylistically and where the believable and the fantastic can vie fairly with one another for our attention and engagement.
